An ageing nursing and midwifery workforce distrustful of management with increasing workloads is an industrial tinderbox, a leading workforce expert has warned governments.
Data presented to the ANF federal council shows nursing as the greatest ageing workforce. Forty-six per cent of Australia's nursing and midwifery workforce is aged over 45 years, 47% are aged 25-44 years and 7% are aged 24 years and under.
More than 8,000 workers from various sectors were studied for the five-year Australia at Work report.
The latest data from May 2008 to 2010 shows nurses "happier" with their hours of work and remuneration for overtime, weekend and on call work. …
